During three years, the Socrates Comenius 1 school development project DIR-EMAS intends to develop, implement and run the European environmental management and audit scheme, by a European collaboration with schools from Austria, Germany, Finland, Romania and Sweden. All the participating schools have experience in implementing environmental activities. The Austrian partner had already implemented an environmental management system that was certified two years ago, by EMAS. These experiences are very important, they give us the chance to learn from others in a European context.
Why EMAS? We think that EMAS is an environmental management system that allows us to:
- improve continuously the environmental activities in the school and to reduce the environmental problems
- develop an environmental attitude at all the persons involved; this will contribute at the development of the Local Agenda 21 process
- develop the school; the school will become, by this means, a model of an efficient and effective system of organizing environmental activities
- support the school in its efforts of implementing an environmental management system.
How? We are planning for the 36 months of the project’s implementation the following steps: lobby for the implementation of the environmental management system, the analysis of environmental aspects, the development of the environmental policy and programme, the development of the environmental management system: documentation and specialization, internal Audit, environmental declaration, EMAS certification, implementation/ examination of the management system/ internal Audit as a continuous process for improvement.
